"We were put here to progress, to learn, to experience things. And that’s really, really important – that we keep on doing that throughout our lives."

Guitar Hero

By his estimation, Dennis Olsen has taught around 80,000 music lessons over his lifetime. The semi-retired musician and music teacher, who studied classical guitar in Spain and England and now lives in Port Alberni, began teaching guitar in 1968 and discovered he loved sharing his knowledge with students. Dennis also has a 6th degree black belt in Wado Kai karate – despite being told when he started that he’d never be a black belt. Five of his children have black belts, while the sixth has a brown belt.

West Coast Sketches, a composition he created a number of years ago, consists of several musical “sketches” about the natural beauty we have here on the West Coast of BC. To Dennis, who is part of the Nisga’a Nation, nature and Indigenous culture are the same thing. “On the West Coast you can't have one without the other. And I think it's really important for us to always keep that in mind in everything that we do,” he says. “Knowledge Network is huge with that in their programming. The documentaries they've done on Indigenous cultures have been big eye openers for me.”

Dennis and his wife Lynn are longtime viewers who are also big fans of the British mysteries. A few years ago, they decided to start giving something back, to make sure the programming they love so much stays available for the people of BC.

“My mother always used to say ‘love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe’. You have to be the one to step up and do stuff. We were put here to progress, to learn, to experience things. And that’s really, really important – that we keep on doing that throughout our lives.”
