The Secret Life of Books
Season 2: Ep: 1 "Confessions of an English Opium Eater"
There are some novels, poems and works of non-fiction that are so important they become more than just literature - they define their age in a way that history books never can. The new season of The Secret Life of Books tells the story of six such masterpieces, showing why they are still so vital today. Amongst the eclectic mix are a memoir of drug addiction, an epic Elizabethan poem, a collection of nonsense verse, a Victorian classic, a children’s adventure tale, and a nostalgic hymn to rural life. Each episode is presented by a well-known British figure, including cultural historian Dr. Janina Ramirez and writer Joann Trollope, who delve into their chosen work’s hidden history and explore its long-lasting influence.
