The Story of Women and Art
Ep: 1 "Story of Women and Art; The"
Why are so few paintings by women in the world's museums and galleries? In this three-part series, professor Amanda Vickery rescues female artists from the shadows of obscurity, giving them their rightful place in the history of Western Art. From the cloistered world of Renaissance Italy and Catholic Spain, through the industrial revolution of Britain and France, to the harsh desert landscape of New Mexico in the early 20th century, Amanda uncovers the stories of talented and tenacious women who overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to fulfil their artistic ambitions. Among them are Renaissance sculptor Properzia de Rossi, who honed her skills using peach stones, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, a portraitist favoured by Marie Antoinette, and Berthe Morisot, who was once dubbed the purist of all Impressionists.
