Daphné Roberts and Harvey Sample

“Knowledge makes the world accessible to everyone. It goes to the back streets of India or Africa and brings them right to your living room. A channel like that is rare and should be supported.”

Daphné and Harvey’s Kitsilano home is filled with artifacts and photos of their world travels. The couple has been together for 20 years and both had done a lot of travelling before they met, collecting treasured mementos of their adventures that now crowd the walls and shelves. “One of my simple pleasures in life is once a month when I do a thorough dusting and polishing of everything,” says Daphné. “And as I go from one object to the other, I reminisce. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Still bitten by the travel bug, they’re making new memories on journeys to far-flung places, although they’re trying to cut back on the number of souvenirs. “It’s just a great feeling to be in another part of the world, miles from home, and seeing new things,” says Harvey. As for Daphné, she loves how travelling draws her out of her comfort zone. “I’ve been to 89 countries and almost half of them are developing countries, because that’s where I like to explore. My high when I travel is to go to places where I really need to make an effort to try to understand and adjust.”

It’s no surprise that when they’re not gallivanting around the globe, Daphné and Harvey enjoy watching travel shows on Knowledge. “It’s a chance to get a glimpse of places where I may not have been and maybe get a spark of interest in going there,” says Harvey. “And Knowledge makes the world accessible to everyone. It goes to the back streets of India or Africa and brings them right to your living room. A channel like that is rare and should be supported.”

“I personally feel really empowered that I’m contributing in my own modest way to keeping these good programs on,” says Daphné. “I think if Knowledge gives you a lot, you should reciprocate.”
