This two-part series highlights each artist's unique interpretive style through rare performance footage culled from archives around the world. Contemporary pianists offer revealing commentary into the legacies of the masters, whose command of the piano is both powerful and astounding.

A showcase of the world's most accomplished 20th-century pianists, beginning with a montage of Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata, comparing the interpretive styles of Glenn Gould, Vladimir Horowitz, and Arthur Rubinstein with rare clips of Wilhelm Backhaus, Alfred Cortot, Edwin Fischer, and Benno Moiseiwitsch. Also included is a rare opportunity to witness the talents of those performing artists associated with the legend of piano - Ignace Jan Paderewski in 1936, a silent film of Rubinstein from 1928, Claudio Arrau in 1970, and Gould performing Bach with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
